Woodvale Primary School has adopted a whole-school approach to the teaching of Literacy and Numeracy. There is a strong focus on students attaining explicit targets and an emphasis on evidence-based, meaningful and contemporary strategies to achieve them.
Literacy and a Numeracy committees are responsible for setting targets and implementing strategies and programs across the school. In 2021, both committees will also play an important role in the whole-school transition to a national curriculum.
Staff collaboration meetings, held outside of normal school hours, allow teachers to develop common-assessment tasks and activities to improve student performance. Individual students are also identified for both extension and remediation.
Professional development sessions covering a range of educational ‘needs’ are held on a regular basis. Visible Learning will continue to be a specific focus in 2021.
Diagnostic tests at various intervals throughout the year will provide staff with a clear understanding of the effectiveness of collaborative strategies in meeting important targets.
Book Week is a popular event held annually to promote reading and literacy. Similar events are also planned for 2021.
